Professor Piotr Radziszewski (specialist in urology, in the course of specialization in clinical oncology), honorary doctorate of the Charles Davilli University, is the Head of the Urology Clinic of the Medical University of Warsaw, he has been involved in international scientific research for many years. Co-founder of the International Society for the Study of Urinary Incontinence, a member of the Board of the International Society for Continuity, a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Urological Association.
He is the President of the Academic Urology Association and a member of the National Development Council of the President of the Republic of Poland.
He has been involved in functional urology for 30 years. The first administration of botulinum toxin to the bladder was made by him in 2001 and it was the first administration of botulinum toxin in the world in the indication of overactive bladder.
The Professor's most important clinical and scientific achievements are:
Botulinum toxin (BTX), is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction and thus diminishes muscle contractions. Injected in small doses into the skin or bladder wall paraliże in a controleed manner the targeted muscle
There is no need for any extra preparations for botulinum toxin therapy.
The only additional recommendation is to have a sterile urine culture (without bacteria) and to urinate directly before the procedure.
The patient is placed on a special urological chair with leg supports.
Using a cystoscope, the doctor can see the inside of the bladder and inject botulinum toxin to its muscles. The procedure lasts only about
60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia by a urologist
in the nurse's attendance.
A doctor under the control of a cystoscope inserted through the bladder injects the 20-30 sites in the bladder. After about an hour after the procedure, the patient can be discharged home.
✓ increasing bladder capacity;
✓ reduction of intravesical pressure during micturition;
✓ relaxation of overactive bladder detrusor muscles;
✓ limitation of bladder contraction;
✓ reducing day and night time frequency of voids;
✓ increasing the amount of urine storage in the bladder;
✓ reducing the feeling of urgency to urinate;
✓ positive impact on the comfort of everyday life.
Most patients receiving botulinum toxin to the bladder describe the procedure as 'unpleasant' but not painful.
About 60 minutes.
After administration of the drug blood in the urine, and immediately after the treatment some degree of bladder pain. These symptoms quickly spontaneously disappear. If necessary, doctor may prescribe painkillers. As a result of anesthesia reactions, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain and diarrhea may also occur.
The improvement is usually noticeable within 2 weeks after the injection.
Usually 8 to 12 months.
